Yakisoba - The classic Japanese Street Food

Writer's picture: SonaliSonali

'Yaki' means pan-fried noodles and 'soba' means buckwheat. So as you might have guessed the basic ingredients and cooking method is in the name. It is a very simple yet tasty dish to make using 3 basic ingredients which is noodles, vegetables and chicken. What makes it so tasty is the yakisoba sauce, which again has 3 main ingredients - soya, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. It is super easy and can be prepared within 20 minutes.

So, why am I persuading to choose Soba noodles over other noodles, let's have a closer look what Soba noodles are all about. Soba noodles are popular in Japanese cuisine because they are tastier, versatile, healthier and have more nutrition benefits than your normal packet ramen noodles which are probably high in the nasties like sodium and monosodium glutamate (msg).

When choosing Soba noodles make sure to check the back of the pack to see the ingredients, the more expensive and authentic noodles should be made of 100% buckwheat, some brands might mix other flours and call it Soba noodles to bring the price down. 100% soba noodles are gluten-free too so can be a great alternative to someone who wants to opt for a gluten free noodles but don't want to choose rice noodles.

Soba noodles are psuedocereals, so not a true cereal grain. They are high in manganese, 1 cup can meat 21 percent of your daily manganese requirement. Manganese is important for bone health, glucose metabolism, and wound healing. It also supports your nervous system. Deficiency of manganese can play a role in osteoporosis, diabetes and epilepsy.

It is a good source of Thiamine, vitamin which is important for energy metabolism and healthy cell generation. High in protein and fibre. Supports your heart and lowers blood sugar. It is low in fat and a good food for your Gut.

I hope I have managed to convince you to make the switch.
