Pea protein is a range of plant protein ingredients which can be sourced from the sustainable yellow pea through water based process. The main restriction on using plant proteins as meat protein alternative has been their taste (varies based on botanical origin), which always has had an unattractive odour and a so-called green (vegetable) sensory note. This undesirable note is linked to the naturally-present volatile molecules, such as hexanal. Roquette, a company that produces plant protein has made it possible to extract the pea protein in a highly purified form (85%) and exclude all the off-odours.

Weight Management:

This can be achieved by:

a) Decrease caloric intake

b) Manage feeling of hunger

c) Achieve Satiety - the opposite of hunger: the feeling of fullness which arises when eating a meal.

The sooner we feel full, the sooner we stop eating and so the fewer calories we consume. It is the management of these 3 steps that is key to addressing the obesity problem. Proteins alone or in combination with fibres are one of the top ingredients used in the weight management sector.

Pea Protein and Satiety:

Animal protein in milk can be effective in achieving Satiety. There are studies that show that Pea protein may trigger satiating hormonal (Cholecystokinin) responses similar to those of whey (source: Leatherhead, Food research Centre). Pea protein offers a sustainable alternative to meat and dairy protein sources in many food applications. Pea protein has a balanced amino acid profile, high digestibility and ease of dispersion. Hence its useful in management of obesity.
